What to Do in Mexico City's Historic Center

Mexico City is one of the largest cities in the world, a place where you feel alive every day, and the Historic Center is the heart of this great metropolis. So, how about taking a relaxed walk, enjoying a beautiful day hand in hand with a local guide, and discovering all the history, culture, art, and food that this great place has to offer? Here are our recommendations for the perfect plan if it’s your first time visiting.

1.- Templo Mayor Museum

This museum houses the archaeological remains of what was the main building for the Aztecs. It’s truly amazing that we have such a powerful heritage in the heart of the city, right next to the east side of the Metropolitan Cathedral. You can’t miss this place full of history dating back to 1325 BC, magic, culture, and art. You just have to be there to feel and begin to understand the great Aztec Empire. The entrance fee is $85.00 MXN, and it’s open from Tuesday to Sunday, 9 AM to 5 PM.

2.- Metropolitan Cathedral

You must visit one of the most important temples in the Americas; its majesty will impress you from the moment you see it. It was built between 1573 and 1813, and due to the prolonged construction time, we can find the artistic work of the main painters, sculptors, and plastic artists of the viceroyalty. Admission is free, and it’s open Monday to Sunday from 9 AM to 5:30 PM.

3.- Living Museum of Muralism

We should know that this artistic gem houses some of the most representative works of Mexican muralism, from artists like Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Fermín Revueltas, and Amado de la Cueva. After years of restoration and work, we can visit and enjoy this museum, which, in addition to the murals, features architecture with quarry decorations that make it a magical place to visit. Admission is free, and it’s open Wednesday to Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM.

4.- El Colegio Nacional

This is one of our favorite places in the center; this public institution brings together the most outstanding Mexican scientists, artists, and writers in the country. Here, members give lectures on their specialty, which are free and open to the public. That is, you can listen to and participate in more than 250 cultural and academic activities that the members of El Colegio Nacional offer for free. In addition to the great intellectual treasure, we must say that the building is a masterpiece of New Spanish Baroque. Admission is free, and it’s open Monday to Saturday from 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM.

5.- Taquería Tlaquepaque

Of course, you can’t leave the Historic Center without eating some delicious tacos al pastor, which are a specialty of Mexico City. So, here are our favorites: although there are several taquerías with the same name, don’t be confused; our favorite is the one located at Av. 5 de Mayo 32-30.

Now, we have to recommend the most important part of your visit: remember that exploring all these places in the company of a local guide completely changes the experience. With Andares Tours, you will understand, appreciate, and enjoy much more of our history, culture, art, and food.
